A plane carrying 20 people crashed on takeoff from Nigeria's Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, killing at least eight, officials said.
Five or six people were hospitalized after the Embraer 120 jet crash-landed at 9 a.m., said Yakubu Dati, a spokesman for the federal airport authority.
The Associated Airlines flight had been slated to travel to Akure, Nigeria, he said.
The country's emergency management agency initially said that 11 people died, but lowered the toll in a Twitter post.
Among the passengers were relatives of the late former governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Agagu, who were accompanying his body on the flight, Nigerian state-run TV broadcaster NTA reported.
The 30-seat passenger plane burst into flames when it crashed, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency said.
